Rodney Crowell in concert

Classics can become cliches. And cliches, like whiskey, nostalgia, and orthodoxy, will deaden the mind.
We can't learn from what we know. It doesn't work that way. But if what we know morphs and changes, and whittles itself down to truthful essence, then we can find delight and inspiration. That's what's going on here, in Rodney Crowell's most unusual of retrospectives. These are songs he wants to sing and play, performed as he wants to sing and play them.

Sam Riggs in concert

Given the choice, Sam Riggs would take skydiving over watching movies on any given Sunday. That sense of daring is a key element in his brand of country, a rock-infused sound with a chip on its sonic shoulder from a guy who counts Garth Brooks, Foo Fighters, George Jones and Blink-182 among his influences. A growing audience has found him. To date, Riggs has racked up more than 2.2 million streams on Spotify and over 600,000 views on YouTube. A number of his singles hit the upper levels of the Texas charts, including the ultra-country "Hold On And Let Go," the thumping concert re-creation "High On A Country Song" and his vulnerable "Second Hand Smoke." To top it off, Riggs picked up the Texas Regional Radio Award in 2016 for Top New Male Vocalist. Riggs' music is making waves nationally, too - the 2016 indie release Breathless debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard Country Albums chart.

Kenny G in concert

A phenomenally successful instrumentalist whose recordings routinely made the pop, R&B, and jazz charts during the 1980s and ’90s, Kenny G‘s sound became a staple on adult contemporary and smooth jazz radio stations. He’s a fine player with an attractive sound (influenced a bit by Grover Washington, Jr.) who often caresses melodies, putting a lot of emotion into his solos. Because he does not improvise much (sticking mostly to predictable melody statements), his music largely falls outside of jazz. However, because he is listed at the top of “contemporary jazz” charts and is identified with jazz in the minds of the mass public, he is classified as jazz.
